Biography
Born in Barbados and raised in the US, Canada, UK and Zimbabwe, Fdot1 brings a wealth of life experience and musical influences to his sound. He started his career in street ciphers in Barbados where he was known as J-Flo. He started producing for other Bajan artists at an early age using just a Roland W30, an MPC60 and a tape deck in his bedroom under the name Floriginul. He went on to master his craft working at one of Barbados’s premier recording studios under the tutelage of Anthony Lowhar. His talent was spotted by an A&R exec visiting the island and landed himself a contract with MC Hammer’s label in the US.Fast forward a few years and Flo came to live in the UK. Within a short time of arriving in the country he established himself as a top-class artist and producer. Flo was soon touring in the UK and Europe with the likes of De La Soul and performing with Ms Dynamite, Immortal Technique, Omarion, Lil’ Wayne and Malarchi. When he wasn’t touring he could be found working through the night in some of London’s top recording studios including Strong Rooms, Vibes Corner and Whoa!, where he recorded and produced for the likes of Sizzla, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Giggs, Ms Dynamite, Tony Rebel, Tinie Tempah, Starboy Nathan and Asher D (So Solid) to name but a few.In 2004 Flo produced the debut album Born To Do It for the hottest property in the Grime scene, Durrty Goodz. Goodz was signed by Polydor Records buy due to an unfortunate set of events, the album was never released. However, the 40+ tracks remain in the Fdot1 archive. In 2011, after a hiatus from the music biz, Flo re-branded and launched himself as the artist Fdot1. Drawing on all the musical influences he grew up with, and giving some up-and-coming artists the opportunity to shine, Flo created the album Money MusicK. The album was born out of his frustration with the music scene and the popularisation of “formula” music. Each and every track on the album is lyrically and musically diverse and stands out in its own right.Money MusicK was followed by sell-out shows including London’s O2 and New York’s Best Buy theatre.. oh and a raunchy video that was banned from TV (Gal Ah Bawl). In 2012 the legendary Man Parrish gave Flo permission to remix his hip hop classic Hip-Hop Be Bop. The video features the godfather of breaking, Crazy Legs, alongside UK breaking champions The Soul Mavericks in an epic virtual transatlantic b-boy battle with US breakers, Supreme Beings.Albums like I’m a Rebel and Here There Everywhere followed with featured artists including Teish O’Day and Genesis Elijah. Flo’s most recent album, simply titled FLORIGINUL, features platinum-selling artist Leee John (Imagination) and Grammy-nominated Tippa Irie. The album is a collection of collaborations with artists from the UK, US, Canada and Barbados with musical styles that cross genre boundaries.Although Fdot1’s roots are firmly hip hop, as both a producer and artist he is not just about hip hop. He has dubstep, drum and bass, RnB, rock and soul tracks in his vast catalogue of music.
